Former world champion, Miss Sophia Mulanovich from Lima Peru cleaned up in Haleiwa, Oahu claiming the OP Pro Hawaii title and taking home a nice $4,500 for her efforts.
Although this was only Sophia´s first win since the US open in July at Huntington beach, she still ranks number 1 for the Vans Triple Crown Surfing Standings. In their words of contest creators, the event is "a 6 star Women´s WQS contest, and the First Jewel in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing." Sophia´s one jewel closer to her tiara.
This returning champ was up against three rising pros who follow her number 1 ranking; In order of 2nd 3rd and 4th: Stephanie Gilmore (Australia), Tais Almeida (Brazil), and equally the experienced Jacqueline Silva. Despite the competition, Sophia held her own through the 35 minute heats- "I really worked for it. I hussled out there. All the heats were really tough and all the girls I came up against surfed so well."
Tomorrow this chica will be heading to the 12th annual Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach. Accompanying her will be Roxy Champion Chelsea Georgeson and 7 time world champion Layne Beachly. You can check out live footage of the event and scores at www.roxy.com/roxypro. The event runs th 24th of November through December 6th.
