Oh no! A surf advisory! I?m glad that the national weather service ?warns? us when there is large surf, so we can? be prepared

I realize the practicality in creating surf advisories, warnings of large surf and complementary adverse affects including strong rips and beach degradation. These warnings serve to protect the public, and in a sense relieve an amount of liability from the shoulders of the state.

In a more comical sense, let’s cogitate on what better purposes these announcements could serve.

Lesser known, but still plausible explanations for what a surf advisory may be:

  1. A very public way of declaring to surfers, surfing photographers and other interested people that… SURF´S UP!- with these announcements there is no need to check your local buoys, and you are given a quick, direct description of where and when you should get on your suit and grab your board.
  2. A warning to all authority figures as to why particular employees, students or clients may be absent from upcoming engagements/responsibilities.
  3. A manifestation of all inland reporters who, while they have to work, can report on where they would rather be, and what they would rather be doing.

There you have it, why surf advisories really exist. If you have more explanations, I would love to hear them.
